Project Plan

El Puente High School

Sampling Objective (e.g. Why you are sampling and what you hope to learn)

We will be sampling the exhaust that is emitted from a Chinese Restaurant that is locate on the other side of El Puente's back yard. It has a weird pipe on its roof that blows out a pale white, and sometimes a pale gray smoke that pollutes all the area around our school. Because the exhaust comes from a kitchen, we expect to find carbon monoxide (from gas stoves), particulates (gas stoves and burnt food), hydrocarbons (from cooking) and nitrogen dioxide (from stoves). We predict that when the restaurant is open, these pollutants will be high enough to detect in our school's area.

What parameters are you sampling for? (e.g. N02, CO, C02)

We will be sampling for CO, PM2.5, NOx and HCs. We will also have to sample for the wind direction to make sure that El Puente is down wind of the restaurant when we are monitoring.

Describe the Method of Data Collection - (Include the frequency, duration and location of monitoring.)

We will set up the monitor on the 3rd floor in El Puente Academy on the fire escape. We will test for the above parameters during our lunch break for one hour. We will repeat the experiment at least once.

Explain how you will establish background levels of sampling parameters.

We will also test the air before the restaurant is open to establish background levels.
